Born on September 26, 1876, Harry Hyde was an early American silent film actor who featured in over 70 films throughout the 1910s. He became a prominent member of D. W. Griffith's Biograph Company stock company, appearing in notable silent shorts such as Her Awakening (1911), Blind Love (1912), The Perfidy of Mary (1913), and The Massacre (1914). Beyond his work in front of the camera, Hyde also ventured into screenwriting, authoring the screenplay for the 1914 Blanche Sweet film vehicle The Sentimental Sister.

In terms of his personal life, early film historical accounts directly link Hyde to the pioneer era of LGBTQ+ figures in Hollywood. Silent screen star Blanche Sweet identified Harry Hyde and fellow Biograph actor J. Jiquel Lanoe as gay during an interview with film historian Anthony Slide. Sweet noted that Hyde and Lanoe were romantically involved and lived together in a hotel situated on Hollywood Boulevard. The two men often appeared in the same Biograph productions side by side during their time working in early California cinema.
